Elumathur

Elumathur is a small township located 19 km south side of Erode, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

In ancient Tamil literature, it is mentioned as எழுமாத்தூர் and some pieces of literature mention it as Ezhumathur.

Elumathur is situated in the western part of Tamil Nadu. In ancient times, it was called Kongunadu (கொங்குநாடு). Ancient Kongunadu was divided into 24 subdivisions. The head of these provinces was called Poondurai Naadu (பூந்துறை நாடு). Poondurai Naadu had 4 capital cities: Poondurai, Vellore, Nasiyanur, and Elumathur.

The native language of Elumathur is Tamil.

Politics

Elumathur is a part of Modakkurichi constituency and elections for the legislative assembly are held every five years. It is also a part of the Erode constituency that votes for parliamentary elections. Since it is a part of gram panchayat, after completion of the term of five years elections are

held to elect Village panchayat president.

People and Culture

The percentage of people below poverty line is around 3%, which is much lower than the national average of 29.8% and the state average of 17.1%. There has not been any major communal violence in the known past. The cultural practices largely resemble those seen in other parts of Tamil Nadu. Majority of the people are Hindus, while Christians and Muslims constitute minor proportions.

Agriculture

The primary occupation of the people is agriculture. For cultivation, farmers depend on water resources from Bhavani Sagar and Mettur dam. The soil is predominantly black, but it also has some red loamy soil. There are small villages located in Elumathur panchayat which include Mosuvan Palli, Avvalur, Pudhupalayam, Kaarakaattu Valasu, Muthuiayan Valasu, Aathikaattu Valasu, and Mettupalayam which highly depends on agriculture,there are many provisional stores in elumathur.
