Edward Norton (conspirator)

Edward Norton (baptised 1654 – 1702) was an English soldier and politician, an early Whig supporter and conspirator of the Rye House Plot.

Life

His sister Ellen married the Westbury Member of Parliament William Trenchard.[1] With Trenchard's support, Norton was himself elected MP for Westbury in the second 1679 general election, though it required an election petition to unseat Henry Bertie and Richard Lewis who had been declared the winners.[2][3]

With others of the Whig faction, he was the target of a government attempt towards the end of 1681 to discredit opponents by establishing subornation of perjury. He appeared before the Privy Council, to answer charges laid by Robert Bolron, and Lawrence Mowbray.[4][5]

Norton attended meetings of the Rye House Cabal around Robert West in December 1682, in which an assassination plot and a general armed uprising were discussed.[6] When the plot was discovered he escaped to Holland.[2]

In later life he supported the Glorious Revolution, and served in the army in the following decade.[2]

gollark: Also, I checked via interweb™, and subdomains can use `document.domain` to set their "origin" to the parent domain, so you can't put anything which needs to not be accessible cross-origin-ly on the actual "madefor.cc" domain itself.
gollark: It's *technically* invalid to have a CNAME and TXT record, although some stuff won't care and some providers support a fake ALIAS thing which works like CNAME but without that constraint.
gollark: You can do that by sticking an HTML file on the server too.
gollark: Basically, Github cannot magically solve any problems with this, but there aren't horrible ones anyway so meh.
gollark: Although you can't use madefor.cc *itself*. and let people put arbitrary content (even GHPages-y *static* content) on it.
