It was inspired by an accident during a big surf where Jack Johnson wiped out and nearly drowned. He had hit an underwater reef on a fall and cut his head wide open. Jack was the youngest pro-surfer to be invited to the Pipe Masters.
The song also talks about the danger of letting fear set in while surfing. Jack believes that one has to believe that one can do it or else, no matter how talented one is, that individual will fail. If you do not commit with heart and soul, you are doomed to make a mistake out of fear and hesitance where reflexes are imperative.

gollark: Are there any issues with the wording of my suggestion as it stands, though?
gollark: Please review my planned "remove sickness" suggestion: https://pastebin.com/G0UkPnc7
gollark: Why do you need a *specific date*?
gollark: I think I may have seen one.
gollark: Also - this applies to many dragons - I sometimes find it hard to see their heads.
