Doug Lewis (Royal Navy officer)

Commodore Douglas Raymond Snell Lewis[1] CBE[1] (born October 1940[2]) is a former Royal Navy officer who later became a senior charity executive.

Royal Navy career

Lewis joined the Royal Navy; in 1969 he was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in the Supply & Secretariat specialisation.[3] He was promoted to commander in 1980,[4] to captain in 1989,[5] and to commodore in 1992.[6]

He was the supply officer of HMS Jupiter in 1974−75,[7] first supply officer of HMS Ark Royal in 1985−86,[8] and commander of the Royal Naval College, Greenwich in 1988−90.[9]

Lewis served five appointments in the Ministry of Defence, including time as Director of Personnel for the Royal Navy;[10] his final post was as Director Personnel Policy for the British Armed Forces[11] between 1995 and 1998. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1993 New Year Honours.[1]

He was president of the Royal Navy Rugby Union between 1997 and 1998.[12]

Charitable activities

Lewis was chairman of Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB; formerly known as ISS UK), the UK Branch of the global International Social Service (ISS) network, from 2004 to 2014.[13] He was president of ISS from May 2014 to May 2018,[14] having previously served as chair of its governing board between 2010 and 2014.[15] On completion of his period of office at ISS in 2018, he rejoined CFAB as its president and as a trustee.[15]

Lewis has been the chair of Compass School Trust since 2011.[16]
