Dictionnaire Bouillet

Dictionnaire Bouillet is the informal title of the Dictionnaire universel d'histoire et de géographie ("Universal Dictionary of History and Geography"), a French reference work in the public domain. The first edition was published in 1842; the 34th and final edition was published in 1914. The original authors were Marie-Nicolas Bouillet (d. 1865) and Alexis Chassang (1827–78).

Neutrality of later editions

Editions after 1852 were amended, probably clandestinely and by the typographers rather than the authors,[1] to make certain articles less offensive to Christian sensibilities.[2] For example, for Cardinal Ximenes, the original Il était fanatique et cruel ("He was fanatical and cruel") was changed to read Il était sévère, mais juste ("He was tough but fair").[3] References to sales of religious indulgences were deleted entirely.[3]

The neutrality of editions after 1842 is therefore open to question when the work touches on Christian themes.

gollark: I probably get away with doing a lot of stuff weirdly because I have a lot of free time and very little actual demand on my server stuff, since the only user is me. Though I do have a lot of important data and random services.
gollark: I just use entirely open-source software on my servers (except gameservers and probably some drivers), and don't have to deal with that sort of problem.
gollark: My stuff displays it just as % utilization with separate frequency graphs per core.
gollark: Measuring it in terms of frequency makes no sense, though. Modern CPUs change their frequency all the time in response to demand, for one thing.
gollark: Measuring CPU usage by *frequency* instead of % seems *really* weird to me.
