Geography

The village lies in a valley partly encircled by the mountain ranges:

  • Rujnica (Babina Gomila), to the north
  • Plina to the west
  • Donja Gora to the south

The valley begins as an inlet from the Adriatic Sea, with its narrow mouth in the East and extends into the West and opens up into a lake, named Lake Desne. Close by lies another lake named Modro Oko and the both are protected landmarks under the 'significant landmarks' category.

History

Desne, by its present name, is the earliest settlement in the Neretva Valley to be mentioned in historic literature. The first documented mention of Desne from 1361 - 1385 A.D. appears in a set of Dubrovnik's archive as the home of a monarch.

Patron Saint

Saint George, (Sv. Jure) is the patron saint of Desne, with the Sv. Jure Desne church erected in his honour.
