David Ferrucci

David Ferrucci was the principal investigator who in 2007–2011 led a team of IBM and academic researchers and engineers[1] to the development of the Watson computer system that won a television quiz.

Ferrucci graduated from Manhattan College, with a B.S. degree in biology and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in 1994 with a Ph.D. degree in computer science specializing in knowledge representation and reasoning.[2] He joined IBM's Thomas J. Watson in 1995 and left in 2012 to join Bridgewater Associates.[3] He is also the Founder, CEO, and Chief Scientist of Elemental Cognition, a venture exploring a new field of study called natural learning, which Ferrucci describes as 'artificial intelligence that understands the world the way people do.'.[4]

Ferrucci is interviewed in the 2018 documentary on artificial intelligence Do You Trust This Computer?

Books

Ferrucci contributed one chapter to the 2018 book Architects of Intelligence: The Truth About AI from the People Building it by the American futurist Martin Ford.[5]

gollark: You have to be able to detect if an object is an AType or BType.
gollark: Imagine you got a list containing both ATypes and BTypes and want to display a list of them or something. The logic for each is somewhat different because they represent slightly different entities.
gollark: You could just have a "thing type" field in them but then you're just doing tagged unions in an indirect way.
gollark: If you want, say, a list of AType values and BType ones, TS has *un*tagged union types for that, but you then have to do stupid stuff to discriminate between them.
gollark: Oh, it's nice for abstract syntax trees too, not that that comes up in frontend development much.
