David Bailie Warden

David Bailie Warden was an Irish republican and an American diplomat, author, and book-collector. Born in 1772 at Ballycastle, near Newtownards, County Down, Kingdom of Ireland, he died in 1845 in Paris, Kingdom of France.

In 1797 Warden received an M.A. from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and was licensed preach by the Presbytery of Bangor, Country Down. He was a pupil of Rev. James Porter at nearby Greyabbey, following his lectures on natural and experimental philosophy. Like Porter, Warden joined the Society of United Irishmen. Inspired by the American, and French, Revolutions, the Society was planning an insurrection to secure a representative and national government for Ireland. When the call came in County Down, on June 9th, 1798, Warden led a troop rebels to success at Saintield, but to defeat with the main body of insurgents at Ballynahinch on June 12th. In 1799 Warden was forced to emigrate to America, sailing to New Bedford on the ship Harmony.

From 1801 to 1804 Warden was the Principal tutor at Kingston Academy, Ulster County, N.Y. In 1804 he became an American citizen, and became private secretary to John Armstrong, US minister to France. In 1808 Designated consul pro tempore. From 1810 to 1814 he was Consul at Paris, France, and agent for prize cases. In 1816 he wrote the Chorographical and Statistical Description of the District of Columbia. Paris : Printed and sold by Smith.
