Biography

Hodrová was born in Prague on 5 July 1946.[3] She did postgraduate studies in French and comparative literature.[3] In 1972–75, she worked as an editor of Slavonic literature in the Odeon publishing house.[3] Since 1975, she worked at the Institute of Czech Literature of the Academy of Sciences (prior to 1993 known as the Institute of Czech and World Literature of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences), where she is now a Senior Researcher.[3]

Her novels typically incorporate topics from her work as a literary scholar, "especially the classification of novels into roman-realité and the roman-invention, or the pioneering theory about the meaning and forms of the initiation storyline in a work of literature."[3] She is perhaps best known for a trilogy called Trýznivé město (Prague: City of Torment), they are distinctive "Prague novels, which aim to convey emblematically the genius loci of this central European city, of whose history Hodrová highlights the tragic features."[3]

Two of her works have been translated into English, Prague, I see a city..., in 2011, translated by David Short and A Kingdom of Souls, in 2015, translated by Véronique Firkusny and Elena Sokol, both published by Jantar Publishing.[4][5]

gollark: Surely language parsing is not *as* complex as massively hard maths problems.
gollark: 3.7 hard.
gollark: Latin grammar isn't *that* horrible. It just has somewhat more flexible word order than, say, English, and also a lot of random suffixes and stuff.
gollark: Revised version is up. You may need to refresh the page a bit to see it. I've tried to keep the content basically the same.
gollark: Anyway, based on feedback from here and [REDACTED], I'm trying to improve the text a bit, trim it down and make it fit better with the "osmarks.tk style".
