Dærick Gröss Sr.

Dærick Gröss Sr. (born January 28th, 1947) is a writer, editor, illustrator, and art director, primarily within the commercial comic industry. Gross has worked with a number of comic book companies, including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Chaos! Comics, Image Comics, Innovation Publishing, and has also begun work under his own company, Studio G[1], with his son, Dærick Gröss.[1] He is the visual editor at inDELible Comics, and is also the art director at ACP Comics working on promotional art, title logos and art direction.[2] He specializes in caricature drawings line art drawings, strong color composition, and graphic arrangement.[3]

Early life and education

Gröss was born in the Dayton suburb of Kettering, Ohio on January 27th, 1947, and was a comic book fan in early in his youth.[2] He later attended the University of Ohio from 1965-1967 studying art and theatre.[3] He was a member of the fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta.[2] After feeling dissatisfied with the art instruction at the university, he finished his education in 1969 at the Central Academy of Commercial Art in Cincinnati, Ohio.[2]

Career

Early career

After graduating, Gröss began working at WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio as a live set designer and creator as well as creating visuals for on camera needs for 3 years.[2] Then Gröss joined the Cincinnati Post as a staff artist and cartoonist, eventually becoming the Art Director of the post, drawing illustrations and helping with page design.[2]

Murciélaga She-Bat

After responding to a bulletin board memo from CFW Magazines, Gröss started his career within the comic book industry with the creation of the character, Murciélaga She-Bat, a part of the REIKI team in Robo Warriors. After DC stopped the production Batwoman comics, Gröss created this latina-mutant character in 1988 within the pages of a karate themed magazine from CFW, Kung-Fu Warriors.[4] Despite selling well, CFW dropped She-Bat, and passed the character to Heroic Publishing.

In the early 1990s, two issues of Murciélaga She-Bat were published under Heroic Publishing, and issue #3 was published under Revolutionary Comics for that single issue.[5]

In 2000, a mini series featuring Murciélaga was released as a bilingual flipbook in both spanish and english. Originally three issues, complications at Gröss' company, Studio G, halted progress of the series.[5]

Heroic Publishing has now republished the original 8 issues of She-Bat and has continued publishing new issues of the series.[5]

Innovation Comics

Dærick Gröss hand painted covers for Innovation Comic's adaptation of the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Series few a volumes of the comics, then additionally penciled and inked for a total of 12 volumes from 1990-91. The series won Comicon's Russ Manning award.[6]

Gröss also worked on the Innovation's comic adaptation of the Forbidden Planet in 1992 as the cover artist of issues #1-4.[7]

Marvel and DC

Gröss worked with Marvel at the X-Men office on Excalibur in issues #84 and #88 penciling Nightcrawler.[8] With Marvel, he joined the Cybercomics project and penciled rendered some stories, specifically Spider-man. Additionally, he worked as an artist on X-Men: Domino issue #1.[9]

With DC Comics, Gröss was an artist for Batman: Two-Face Strikes Twice on issues #1 and #2 in 1993.[10]

Additional work

With Carnal Comics, an adult comic book company, Gröss worked on several different series as an artist throughout the 90's.[11]

One of Gröss’ most well-known works is The Guide To Getting It On published by Goofy Foot Press as an illustrator with the psychoanalyst and author, Paul Joannides. This book was originally published in 1996, but is currently on its ninth edition. It is an educational sexual manual, outlining various health issues and recommendations associated with sexually active adults. This guide is required reading in over 50 college sex education courses and continues to be printed and taught at schools.[12]

Gröss also did some penciling and inking work featured in Gay Comics issue #24.[13]

Additionally, Gröss has illustrated several trading card decks, including the Marvel trading card game, Overpower[14] and with Fantasy Flight Games, he created a set of Game of Thrones playing cards.[15]

Publishing company

Dærick Gröss Sr. founded the company, Dærick Gröss Studios, creating freelance commercial art and illustration services in 1989. The artist renamed the studio in the early 1990s to Studio G. His son, Dærick Gröss, merged into the company in 1996. Due to a fire in 2001, much of Gröss' work through the company was destroyed prior to that date. It is now an independent publisher of small comics throughout 2000s. The company is now in its third generation of illustrators with Gröss' granddaughter entering the business as well.[1]

Through Studio G, Gröss has released an assortment of T-Shirt designs featuring his assorted works.[16] Dærick Gröss Sr. started a small series of online political cartoons in 2017 featuring the president of the United States, Donald Trump, called Trumpy. The work is a political commentary and satire.[17]
