Cyril Bernard Papali

Father Cyril Bernard Papali OCD or "Fr. Cyril Bernard of the Mother of God OCD" (1902–1981) was a Carmelite friar of the Manjummel Province. He was born in Cochin, Kerala, India, in 1902.

Work as a friar

Father Cyril was the last friar to hold the position of Prior General of the TOCD of Manjummel. He was later called to Rome to teach Hinduism in the Roman Universities. Thus he became the first professor of Hinduism in the Roman Universities.

In 1962, he was an Ordinary Professor of Missionology in the Urbanian University, Rome. In 1964, he was a Consultant of Vatican Secretariat for Non-Christians.

He was a close friend of Pope Pius VI and was of cultural and intellectual assistance to the Pope during the pope's visits to Indian and Philippines. He was assigned peritus to the Second Vatican Council on the question of the laity and non-Christian religions. He wrote several books and articles in the field of theology, philosophy and religion. His books on 'Hinduism: Religion and Philosophy' is still a classical work in latin language ever written by an Indian.

He was a multi talented Carmelite: he was expert in violin,a good photographer and interested in mechanical engineering.

Above all he was a holy contemplative Carmelite whose virtuous life is still acclaimed by his contemporaries.
