History
Following the implementation of the Local Government Act 1888, which established county councils in every county, it became necessary to find offices for the Isle of Wight County Council.[1] Premises were acquired in High Street, Newport.[2] A new building, which was designed by Gutteridge and Gutteridge in the Neo-Georgian style, was built on the same site and officially opened by Lord Bayford in October 1938.[3] A modern extension was built to the east of the main building in 1969.[3] Following a change of name of the former County Council to Isle of Wight Council in 1995,[4] County Hall became the home of the new unitary authority.[5] The Citizens Advice Service moved into the building in 2018.[6]
