History

Following the implementation of the Local Government Act 1888, which established county councils in every county, it became necessary to find offices for the Isle of Wight County Council.[1] Premises were acquired in High Street, Newport.[2] A new building, which was designed by Gutteridge and Gutteridge in the Neo-Georgian style, was built on the same site and officially opened by Lord Bayford in October 1938.[3] A modern extension was built to the east of the main building in 1969.[3] Following a change of name of the former County Council to Isle of Wight Council in 1995,[4] County Hall became the home of the new unitary authority.[5] The Citizens Advice Service moved into the building in 2018.[6]

gollark: Wow.
gollark: That's YOURS?
gollark: > Speaking of domains what the fuck should I do with a meme website that costs me $60 a month in hosting fees because it blew up far more than I hoped it to... cheaper hosting? Point your domain at osmarks.tk instead?
gollark: You need a compass, straightedge, and a bucket containing between 6 and 83 bees.
