The village was first mentioned in the 16th century.

Galaktion Tabidze and Titian Tabidze, both famous poets, were born in Chkvishi.

The Galaktion and Titsian Tabidze House Museum is located in the village.[2][3]

As of the 2014 national census, Chkvishi had a population of 376,[1] almost entirely (100%) Georgians.[4]
