Chase Owen

Chase Owen (born April 10, 1992) is an American race car driver,[1] team-owner,[2] and entrepreneur. Born in Houston, Texas,[1] Owen is best known for his successful open-wheel racing career in America, Europe, and Asia. His rapid progression in international motor racing began in late 2014, after winning Skip Barber Racing School's Indy Car Academy Shootout with no prior racing experience.[3][4] He was awarded with a full season in the 2015 Skip Barber Summer Series Championship (where he finished 2nd overall after winning 8 races)[5] and RACER Magazine's "Top Gun Award."[6] Owen went on to be nominated for the Team USA Scholarship[7] and raced FF1600's for Cliff Dempsey Racing in 2016, where he won the Avon Tyres Northern Championship,[8][9] placed 2nd in the Avon Tyres National Championship,[8][9] 6th in the Formula Ford Festival,[8][9] and was crowned the "Star of Anglesey" and "Champion of Oulton Park."[8][9] Later, after finishing 7th in the 2017 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship,[10] Owen launched his own Formula 3 motor racing team (named "Chase Owen Racing") and entered into the 2018 F3 Asian Championship.[2] In doing so, Owen became among the youngest FIA-sanctioned team-owner/team-driver's in the sport at age 25. Owen was also named one of the top-6 American racers ever to have competed in Formula Ford 1600.[11]

Racing career

Early career

Owen entered motorsport at age 22, far later than most other competitive racing drivers. Growing up, his family had no connection to the sport and he was first introduced to motor racing as a senior in college, where he enrolled in Skip Barber Racing School's 3-day introductory class at Laguna Seca Raceway. There, his instructors nominated him to compete in the school's annual Indy Car Academy Shootout,[12] which Owen ended up winning,[3] thus jump-starting his career in motorsport.

While competing in the 2015 Skip Barber Summer Series, Owen was nominated for the Team USA Scholarship.[7] Although a finalist, Owen was not chosen as one of the two recipients of the scholarship that year. However, through the Team USA program, Owen was introduced to Cliff Dempsey of "Cliff Dempsey Racing" in the UK. Owen eventually joined Dempsey's Irish FF1600 racing team in 2016.[13]

Formula Ford 1600

Owen simultaneously competed in the 2016 Avon Tyres Northern Formula Ford Championship (1st overall)[14] along with the 2016 Avon Tyres National Formula Ford Championship (2nd overall)[15] with Cliff Dempsey Racing. Owen also entered the 2016 Formula Ford Festival (6th overall)[16] and also picked up the "Star of Anglesey" and the "Champion of Oulton Park" accolades.[8][9]

BRDC British Formula 3 Championship

In December 2016, Owen signed with the "Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing" team (after a merger between Cliff Dempsey Racing and Hillspeed Racing's F3 team) to compete in the 2017 BRDC British Formula 3 Championship[9] alongside teammate Jordan Cane. However, Cane's early-season departure from the team left Owen without a teammate, and he struggled to find pace in the highly-competitive field of drivers. Owen ended the season 7th in the championship,[17] with a best-finish of 2nd-place at Donington Park.[18]

F3 Asian Championship

In early 2018, the FIA-sanctioned F3 Asian Championship was formed.[19] Soon after the announcement, Owen negotiated a team-entry from the championship-promoter and formed a team under the name "Chase Owen Racing" to compete in the inaugural season of the 2018 F3 Asian Championship.[2][20] As team-principal, Owen also took on a role as team-driver alongside the Chinese driver James Yu.[21]
