Calum Gourlay

Calum Gourlay is a Scottish bassist, composer and band leader. He is considered one of the UK's leading young musicians and a virtuoso of the double bass.[1] He is largely based in London, UK.

Early life and education

Gourlay grew up in Glasgow and Fife. He learned cello as a child and switched to double bass at the age of 14. He played in his father's jazz workshops and Scottish big bands, including Tommy Smith’s Scottish National Jazz Orchestra.[2]

He trained at Royal Academy of Music, where he won the Benjamin Dollinger Prize and the Yamaha / Classic FM Jazz Scholarship.[3]
