Biography

Brian A. Metcalf directed, produced and wrote the micro-budgeted drama/thriller The Lost Tree.[1][2] The premiere was held at the TCL Chinese Theatre[3] and then given a limited theatrical release[4] before being distributed through Amazon[5] and Redbox.[6]

Metcalf then wrote, directed, produced and acted in his next feature called Living Among Us which stars John Heard, William Sadler, James Russo, Esme Bianco, Andrew Keegan and Thomas Ian Nicholas. The film was distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and given a limited theatrical release.[7][8] The reviews from the horror community were fairly positive. Geek Chic Elite gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, saying "It was a refreshing look at a tired genre and showed filmmakers and fans alike that yes, vampires can still be interesting."[9] Cryptic Rock gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5, and called it "a solid vampiric offering that adds a little bit of happy into the start of 2018."[10] Psycho Drive In gave the film a B+, stating that "The story is entertaining, the effects are wonderful, and it’s fun to see John Heard one final time on screen as something other than a loving, if not criminally forgetful father."[11] Found Footage Critic gave the film a 6.7 out of 10, saying "Living Among Us is a rare found footage film that takes the time to explicitly tell the audience what kind of hardware the characters are working with."[12] Horror Movie Freaks gave the film a 10 out of 10, and stated "I really do not have anything bad to say about this movie. It was one hell of a horror flick that I suggest everyone sees, even if only once in your life."[13] Top Found Footage Films called it "a breath of fresh air for the genre and a high quality production!"[14]

Later, Metcalf helped produce the documentary Little Gandhi and won the Murray Weissman Award for the poster he created.[15] Variety also announced in February 2018 that Metcalf would be directing a character drama script by Rex Pickett (Sideways).[16]

More recently, Metcalf wrote, directed, produced and acted in the drama/thriller Adverse, with a cast starring Mickey Rourke, Lou Diamond Phillips, Sean Astin, Penelope Ann Miller, Matt Ryan, Jake T. Austin, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Andrew Keegan, Shelley Regner and more.[17] Adverse had its world premiere at Fantasporto Film Festival, Portugal's largest film festival.[18] It was recently announced that Metcalf won a Platinum Remi Award for directing Adverse at the 2020 WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, the oldest independent film festival in the world.[19] He also won The Award of Excellence Special Mention from IndieFEST for his work on Adverse. [20] Rourke quoted the following about working with Metcalf on the film: “I had a wonderful time working with the innovative, talented director Brian Metcalf. The young man has incredible integrity and vision. He has gained my respect.”[21]
