Boris Fedorovich Borzin

Boris Fedorovich Borzin (other spellings: Borsin, Borzine) was born in Ukraine on December 29th, 1923 and died in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1991. He was a Soviet realism painter, graphic artist, conservator, art historian, author and a tenured professor of fine art for 30 years at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.[1], (formerly Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute). Boris Borzin was also a veteran of the Great Patriotic War (WWII).

Biography

Boris F. Borzin was a graduate of the Lithuanian State Art Institute. His post-graduate work was done at the department of higher education at the Moscow State Stroganov Academy of Design and Applied Arts, and later his candidacy work at The Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Boris was a member of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists, taking part in more than 60 art exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Moscow and abroad. Many of his works are owned by private collectors and art galleries, and were acquired by Fine Arts Foundation of The Russian Federation, and later by the Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg as well as other state museums. He helped organize and participated in yearly exhibitions of Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and exhibited in almost all of the "Exhibitions of Leningrad artists"[2][3][4][5][6][7], "Our Contemporary"[8][9] exhibitions organized by the State Russian Museum in the Central Exhibition Hall, at the premises of the St. Petersburg Union of Artists, as well as in exhibitions "Russian Landscape", "50 years of Soviet Power" and in many others. Throughout his artistic career Boris Borzin always remained true to the traditions of Soviet realism and the Leningrad School of Artists. His main genres were landscape, portrait, and still-life.

A large number of his works were donated to and acquired or purchased by Russian museums and Russian State Art Foundations. Some of his works are in permanent collections of Tretyakov Gallery ( "Self Portrait"[10]), State Russian Museum( oil painting "Window. Poplar branch."[11], 2 graphic portraits[12] and 8 portrait drawings[13]), Museum of the History of St. Petersburg (3 landscape oil paintings[14]), Benois Family Museum (landscape oil painting[15]), Yelagin Palace Museum (landscape oil painting[16]), and others.

Boris Borzin served in the Great Patriotic war of 1941-45 and was awarded 7 metals. Throughout his life he painted many war genre paintings, such as his well-known triptych "Leningrad - Boundaries of Glory" displayed in the October exhibition of Leningrad Artists[17] (now owned by Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad), and his graphic portraits of veterans that were exhibited at the "30 years after Victory in the Great Patriotic War Exhibition" [18] (acquired by the Russian State Arts Foundation).

After the war, Boris Borzin lead a team of restorers and conservators in the restoration of murals and ceiling paintings of a number of historic landmarks in St. Petersburg and its surroundings; most notably the Hermitage Museum, the Summer Palace, Yelagin Palace, Saint Isaac's Cathedral , Monplaisir Palace, and others. Afterward he wrote a book on the subject titled "Decorative Art in Time of Peter The Great[19]" and was awarded the silver medal of the Academy of Arts of USSR[20] for it. He also wrote several publications on the topic of artistic education, art history, and preservation of art[21][22].

In 1991 two personal posthumous exhibitions of Boris Borzin's paintings and graphic works took place in St. Petersburg in Rossi Pavilion of the Summer Gardens[23] and in the Benois Family Museum[24] in Peterhoff. In 1992 a large personal exhibition of Boris's works was opened in Yelagin Palace in St. Petersburg[25]; his drawings of famous chess players were exhibited at the Chess Club of Chigorin Memorial[26], and in Spring, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall displayed his graphic portraits of famous musicians sketched during the concerts[27]
