BioTherm Energy

BioTherm Energy is a South African developer of renewable energy sources and power plant operator,[1] founded in 2003 and based in Johannesburg.[2] The chief executive officer is Robert Skjodt,[3] replacing Jasandra Nyker. The company is one of Africa's leading independent power producers (IPPs).[4]

History

The company was founded in 2003 and in 2008 it received a $150m investment from the private equity firm Denham Capital, which was the largest investment in renewable energy in Africa at the time.[5]

In 2011 Jasandra Nyker became CEO of Biotherm. In 2012 she was named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.[6]

In 2015 it was awarded contracts for three renewable power projects in South Africa totalling 251MW.[7]

Biotherm aims to be a pan-African power company.[7] The company has won contracts in Zambia, Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire and Ghana,[8] and in 2018 it had a pipeline of more than 2 GW of wind and solar projects across these countries.[9]

In 2019 it was sold by Denham Capital to Actis Capital, with Robert Skjodt becoming the CEO.[10][11][12]

In 2020 Biotherm received guarantees amounting to US $116m from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), a subsidiary of the World Bank Group. This supports four renewable energy power plant projects in South Africa signed in 2018,[9] and provides backing against risks for a period of 15 years.[4][13]
