Binod (meme)

Binod was a YouTube comment that became a viral meme in India in August 2020.[1] It originated from a YouTube channel called "Slayy Point"[2] who discovered comments by a channel named Binod Tharu, that had not uploaded any videos and was only adding his first names in comment section of YouTube videos. Binod memes started popping up created to troll him.[3]

On 15 July 2020, two YouTubers, Abhyudaya Mohan and Gautami Kawale who run the channel "Slayy point", uploaded a comedy video titled Why Indian Comments Section is Garbage (BINOD) which examined the comments made by Indians on various YouTube channels.[4] [5] The video also included a single comment, Binod, which was repeatedly mentioned by a single person called Binod Tharu in every popular India related YouTube videos.[6] [7] The video triggered an online trend among Indians and people in India started to use the term "Binod" in social media posts and comments.[8]

The name Binod initially sparked memes in Twitter. Mumbai Police, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Tinder, Airtel, Disney+Hotstar and Swiggy also posted Binod memes after the emergence of the trend.[9] Paytm changed its username for a few while on twitter after a request from a user.[10] Netflix India posted memes of some of their original films such as Sex Education and Stranger Things.[11] State Bank of India also made use of Binod memes to warn customers against online frauds.[12]
