bigbasket is an Indian online grocery delivery service.[3] The company primarily delivers grocery goods found in convenience stores, home essentials and food supplies to its customers. bigBasket was founded in December 2011 and has its headquarters in Bangalore, India.[4][5]

History

bigbasket company was founded by V S Sudhakar, Hari Menon, Vipul Parekh, Abhinay Choudhari and V S Ramesh in 2011. Initially, in 1999, they started India's first e-commerce site FabMart and then went on to establish Fabmall-Trinethra chain of more than 200 grocery supermarket stores in southern India, the business was later sold to Aditya Birla Group. It is popularly known as 'More' retail chain.[6] In 2011 they launched bigbasket online grocery delivery service. On August 9, 2019, bigbasket partnered with a non-profit organisation Goonj and through their Rahat flood programme provided relief materials to people who were affected during the Kerala Flood.[7]

bigbasket currently operates in 30 cities namely Hyderabad, Mumbai,Kochi, Pune, Chennai, Delhi, Noida, Mysore, Coimbatore, Vijayawada-Guntur, Kolkata, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar, Lucknow-Kanpur, Gurgaon, Vadodara, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Nagpur, Patna, Indore, and Chandigarh Tricity city limits.[8][9]

In March 2020, they acquired micro-delivery firm, DailyNinja.[10][11]

Description

Customers use a mobile application to order groceries online, bigbasket employees then secure the items from their warehouse and deliver the items to the consumer. bigBasket has partnered with Bayer CropScience project which has over 8000 local farmers across India that help harvest crops and processed at their collection centers.[12] In December 2018, bigbasket launched bbdaily service to deliver milk to its customers. In June 2018, they launched bb Instant.[13][14] During the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, bigBasket along with Grofers and Amazon India was among the few online grocery platforms that continued to operate in India.[15][16]

Partnership

In April 2020, they partnered with American firm Uber and Indian company Rapido to deliver the essential item to people.[17][18]
