Bhavan's College

Bhavan's College is a college located at Andheri a neighborhood in West Mumbai, India. It was established in 1946, a year before India gained independence from The British Empire in 1947. Dr. K.M. Munshi was the founding president of the college.

Bhavan's College is a part of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The college is built upon 45 acres (180,000 m2) of land and has huge volleyball and basketball courts, as well as football pitches, a botanical garden and an adventure park. It primarily offers higher secondary (junior college) and undergraduate (bachelor's) courses.[2] There a few postgraduate and PhD programs too.

Festival

  • O2 – ‘O2 the Fest’ is a theme-based and Popular intercollegiate cultural festival, involving student participation from a number of city Colleges. It was discontinued some years ago.
  • Kalamotsav is the annual college festival that is conducted in the month of December. It lasts for about a week and consists of several extra-circular competitions. Unlike O2 and Ray, this event is open only for the students of the college.

Activities

  • NCC - Cadets are trained during camps in areas like disaster management, first aid, martial arts, mountaineering, army, self-defense and other tools of sustenance and survival. The cadets also offered their social services in Blood Donation Camp, Ganapati Visarjan Project and Red Ribbon Ex. Rally against AIDS, Pulse Polio Drive, Senior Citizen Adoption, Tree Plantation, Anti Female Foeticide Rally and gave their contribution towards society
  • NSS - encourages students in developing soft skills, discipline, and empathy to serve fellow beings and community. N.S.S. volunteers participate in Community service during festivals and social drives. Street plays on social issues are also staged by NSS volunteers. Preparing documentaries and projects with specific social messages. Student initiative drives with social message like BEEP (drive against use of abusive language) and ACT HUMAN (drive to initiate civic sense awareness).

Sports

College has a gymkhana along with a large play ground. All the sports activities are looked after by Sports Committee composed of faculty members and student representatives. As per University guidelines on 3% seats in all academic programs students with achievements in sports are admitted. College has a busy sporting schedule in which various inter-class tournaments in the disciplines of football, cricket, volleyball, chess, and table tennis are organized. Apart from this there is annual Athletics meet. In addition, students regularly participate in various intercollegiate sports meets at both state and national levels. Services of best coaches are hired and latest equipments are made available to the participants. Students who participate in sports competitions are helped by the faculty members to cope with their studies. Various scholarships and prizes are instituted to encourage students to take up sports. Students who enroll in sports activities are given 10 marks in their current semester examination. Students who is not able to attend lectures due to sports activities are given full attendance. Re-examination will be conducted for the student who misses the exam. There is also an annual sports day held on the Bhavan's ground where college students can participate in various sports events.

The College was established in 1946 by Kulapati Dr. K.M.Munshiji as a constituent institution of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The College was re-accredited with a grade of 'A', by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The Assessment was based on following seven criteria: Curricular Aspects; Teaching-learning and Evaluation; Research, Consultancy and Extension Activities; Infrastructure and Learning Resources; Students Support and Progression; Organization and Management; and Healthy Practices. The assessment was carried out in 2015.

Post-Accreditation period has been a happening period in the College. New Academic Programmes – 3 UG & 3 PG have been added to the bouquet, keeping in mind needs of students who are employed but want to continue their studies, so that they can attend academic sessions in the evenings or weekends. Academic flexibility offered to the socio-economically and culturally diverse profile of students has enriched the learning experience on the campus. Faculty members of the College have been inducted on various academic bodies of other Universities in addition to University of Mumbai, contributing in the development and updating of curricula as well as examination and research.

Library

Bhavan’s College Library was established in 1946 to achieve the objectives of Bhavan’s College and to impart Bharatiya Vidya. Bhavan’s Library being an integral part of the teaching program and curriculum playing a central role in enhancing the quality of academic and research environment in the College. Initially it has a collection of around 10,000 books mostly in the field of Arts and at present the Library possesses a very rich Collection of Books, Periodicals, Audio-Visual materials, Bound Volumes and up course E-Resources to cater the changing needs of staff and students fraternity.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have immensely impacted on the functioning of College Libraries. To enhance value based services to users and to meet end-user's demands and expectations, the Library has automated its functions and services by using Library Management Software “Libsys”.

Library collection at present

Collection of the Library has been acquired and developed keeping in view the present and potential requirements of the users. Bhavan’s College Library has more than 55,000 books pertain to Arts, Commerce, Science, Management and IT. The collection includes

The Library is subscribing more than 80 periodicals including national and international journals from reputed publications. The old issues of the journals are preserved in the form of Bound Volumes. The library is holding around 1400 bound volumes.

Audio-Visual materials

To make teaching and learning more effective, library has started adding Audio-Visual materials like CDs and DVDs. These materials are used for classroom teaching and students can also browse them in the library. At present library has around 355 CDs / DVDs.

Gymkhana

The College GYMKHANA has facilities for games and sports like Cricket, Football, Volley-Ball, Kho-Kho, Kabbadi, Table-Tennis, Chess, Carrom etc.

The College has a spacious sports ground suitable for all field and track events. Gymkhana Common Room is open from 8:30&a.m. To 5:00 p.m. All the students of the College are the members of the Gymkhana.

Annual Competitions in Indoor games and Outdoor games are conducted by the College. The selected students are sent to represent the College at inter-collegiate competitions fulfilling our founder’s vision of Education as an Art of Self Sculpture.

Placement Cell

Career Guidance and Placement Cell and Entrepreneurship Cell: These cells were established in the year 2005–06.

Career counseling is carried out periodically by the Career Guidance Cell to encourage students to complete their course work so as to secure gainful employment.

The Career Counseling Cell holds seminars and programs guiding students in choosing right careers. The college has a separate notice board for display of notices regarding competitive examinations, job fairs, education fairs, various government and non-government courses.

An annual Career fair is hosted by the College to provide the glimpses of career options available for the students in various fields.

The Placement Cell holds on-campus recruitment on a periodic basis, assists students in summer jobs, training programs and procuring part-time jobs. For the past few years, College has received enquiries for placements from Morgan chase, Wipro, TCS, Mahindra Tech, ICICI Prudential, HDFC Standard Life etc. Placement cell provides interested organizations with the details of students and also informs the students about their placement schedules and procedures of these organizations.

Entrepreneurship Cell: National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) was a venture by Wadhwa Foundation initiated in 2004 to promote entrepreneur skills of the students. Entrepreneurship Cell of Bhavan’s College was established in association with NEN in the year 2005 under aegis of S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research on the campus. From time to time, the cell has arranged programs for in the young Bhavanites to inculcate entrepreneurial spirit in the budding business enthusiasts.

From this Academic Year the College has introduced “Bhavan’s College Unit for Special Privilege to Students” (BCUSPS). The Centre will be conducting following activities:

1) Career & Counseling 2) Remedial Coaching for academically weaker students 3) Coaching for competitive examinations for entry into service e.g. UPSC, MPSC, SSB, NSBC 4) Coaching post graduate students for NET / SET 5) Special coaching for deferentially able students

Botanical Garden

A botanical garden is a garden dedicated to the collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of plants labelled with their botanical names. It may contain specialist plant collections such as cacti and succulent plants, herb gardens, plants from particular parts of the world, and so on; there may be greenhouses, shade-houses, again with special collections such as tropical plants, alpine plants, or other exotic plants. Visitor services at a botanical garden might include tours, educational displays, art exhibitions, book rooms, open-air theatrical and musical performances, and other entertainment.

Ground

The main ground behind the campus buildings

Bhavan’s College has a separate Gymkhana office and a venue for indoor games.

The college campus has two grounds. The main ground, which is bigger in size is situated behind the campus buildings and is generally used for football and cricket. It is also used for hosting state-level matches of games likeKho Kho and annual college events like Kalamotsav.

The smaller one is adjacent to the main library is used for sports like volleyball, throwball and badminton.

The basketball courts of Sardar Patel Institute of Technology (SPIT) and Bhavan’s A. H. Wadia School are shared by the college's students.

N.S.S.

Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage. The cardinal principle of the NSS program is that it is organised by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation building.

Activities: Organised Disaster Management workshop, Project on railway commuters’ awareness, Rally organized by MDAC, Sale of badges, flag prepared by deferentially abled children, Monsoon Marathon for awareness about global warming, Workshop on ‘Food Safety and Consumers’ Education and a workshop on ‘Management of E Waste’ at Sathaye College.

The Junior College N.S.S. : It has been consistently organizing Inter-collegiate street-play competition with a different socially relevant theme every year since last more than four years.

NCC

The Motto of NCC is Unity and Discipline; Cadets are trained during camps in areas like disaster management, first aid, martial arts, mountaineering, army, self-defense and other tools of sustenance and survival. A Tar road and open space around the College buildings are being used for NCC parades and march-past practice. College also provides facilities for adventure activities like River Crossing, Rappling, and Training for Civil Defense. A plan to establish an obstacle course and a shooting range for training NCC cadets is under consideration.

Achievements of NCC cadets :

CDT Himani Rawat has cleared her SSB interviews at Bhopal for Army (2011-2012) Student Rajdeep was inspired to join the Army after he cleared his UPSC and SSB and now undergoing Army training (2011). CDT Ashwin Patkar represented RD Parade for the state of Maharashtra and trophy was awarded by the Prime Minister of India (2009-2010) CPL Garima Sharma underwent special training for Scuba Diving by Indian Navals (2009-2010)

Cultural activities

A separate office has been provided to the Cultural Committee to coordinate and organize intra and intercollegiate events. A cozy platform has been constructed, popularly called ‘Kollege Katta.’ It is a fantastic place abuzz with enthusiastic students who flock there for informal activities, discussions and to practice performing arts. Not only by providing infrastructure, but various activities have been introduced such as – Cycle rally has been organised since last few years, to celebrate 50 glorious years of Maharashtra. An Inter Collegiate Elocution and Essay writing competitions for a rotating Munshi Memorial Trophy have been instituted in 2000-2001. The response of the Colleges has been remarkable over the last few years. The playground mentioned above, and ‘Kalangan’ (another huge ground) are used as open air auditorium for organizing inter-collegiate festivals wherein about 10000 students can be accommodated. Achievements at Youth festival organized by Department of Student’s Welfare, University of Mumbai.

Youth Festival: An annual Youth Festival is organized by the Students’ Welfare Department of the University of Mumbai. Two staff members of the College have been consistently contributing in a major way towards the organization of this national level cultural festival. Bhavan’s College hosted elimination rounds of Zone III (Dahisar to Bandra) for Fine Arts and Literary Events of the Youth Festival. The performance of the students at the University Youth Festival through the last few years has remarkable. In the year 2009-10 the College won 12 prizes in all at the National level as follows:

  • Pranay Parab won I Prize in English Story Writing
  • Ankit Choudhary – II Prize in Poetry recitation
  • Adarsh, Devang, Praful, Deepika, Anuja – II Prize in Group Song
  • Amrutam 2011-12 (Bhavan’s College)
  • Amol Mohite – III Prize in Rangoli
  • Ashish Shrivastav – III Prize in Mimicry
  • Ms. Nitya Nadar and Ms. Vandana Singh (T. Y. B. A. – History) won 1st and 2nd prize respectively in quiz competition conducted by Numismatic Museum.
  • Balu Powde won first prize in storytelling and also a consolation prize for elocution.
  • Nadim Shaikh has won the first prize in elocution competition in English.
  • Rahi Lokeshwar Govind has won International championship in Taekwondo Korean martial arts

O2 the Fest In the month of December, every year the College hosts its own Inter Collegiate Fest called ‘O2 the Fest – Where life begins’.

Talent Search: College organizes Talent Search i.e. competitions among students in various Cultural events like singing, instrumental music, dance, dramatics etc. in the month of July / August.
