Backstreet Rookie

Backstreet Rookie[1] (Korean: 편의점 샛별이; Hanja: 便宜店 샛별이; RR: Pyeonuijeom Saetbyeoli; lit. Convenience Store Saet-byul) is a 2020 South Korean television series starring Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung. It is based on the 2016–2017 webtoon Convenience Store Saet-byul written by Hwalhwasan.[2][3] It is the first Korean drama invested by the global channel Lifetime and produced by Taewon Entertainment.[4] The series aired on SBS TV at 22:00 (KST) time slot from June 19 to August 8, 2020 on Fridays and Saturdays for 16 episodes. It is available on iQIYI with subtitles in multiple languages globally.[5][6]

Synopsis

Choi Dae-hyun (Ji Chang-wook) runs into a group of female high school students, including Jung Saet-byul (Kim Yoo-jung), who look like troublemakers. Saet-byul asks Dae-hyun to buy them cigarettes from a convenience store, but he buys them candy instead and gives Saet-byul his number. She never calls him.

Three years later, Dae-hyun runs a small convenience store after resigning. While looking for a part-time worker to work the night shift at his convenience store, Saet-byul applies for the job and starts working there.[7]

A 29-year-old convenience store manager with a tall and hunky appearance that makes every woman turn around. He is a little bit clumsy and weird despite his cold appearance. He is kind and sympathizes with others and gets too immersed in someone else's situation.[7]
The owner of four-dimensional character yet refreshing beauty. Even though she has amazing athletic ability and great fighting skills, she is a 22-year-old young woman who loves flowers, loves friends, and enjoys retro-sensational songs and fashion.[7]

She is the daughter of the second largest shareholder of the convenience store head office, but has been admitted with skill and has been promoted with clear results.[11]

The first script-reading was held in February 2020.[14] The series is directed by Myoungwoo Lee of hit series The Fiery Priest (2019).[15]

The main cast (Ji Chang-wook, Kim Yoo-jung, Han Sun-hwa and Do Sang-woo) appeared on the 507th episode of the variety show Running Man to promote the series.[16]

Criticism

The show has been heavily criticised for its vulgar depiction of a webtoon artist portraying crude sexual behaviour and moaning as he's drawing. The webtoon artist is portrayed as a black-face rastafarian suggesting that those with dreadlocks and/or black skins are dirty as special effects shows flies flying off the dreadlocks and odours vaporising from the character.[17] As a result, viewers took to the SBS Discussion boards due to the revealing nature of the series, with more than 6,000 signatures calling for the show to be cancelled.[18][19]
