The village of Austreim was the site of a medieval stave church that was first mentioned in historical records in 1308. The church was torn down in the 1600s and a new church was built about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the west in Kyrkjebø where the present Kyrkjebø Church is located. A memorial stone was erected in 1991 to mark the site of the historic church.[3]
