His father, Felix McGrath, skied for the United States Ski Team on the World Cup circuit from 1984 through 1990, during which time he achieved one podium finish in slalom. His mother, Selma K. Lie, raced XC skiing in Norway and on the NCAA Skiing Championships circuit for the UVM Ski Team.[3][4]

He grew up a multisport athlete, also racing XC skiing until the age of 12 and playing soccer until the age of 15. He represents the sports club Bærums SK.[2]
