The race was inaugurated in 2015[1] and the event was run over the 1 12 miles distance.[1]

The event is named in honor of the mare Astra[2] who won four Grade I events including the Santa Barbara Handicap twice, which is run at Santa Anita Park.

In 2019 the event was upgraded to a Grade III event.[3]

In 2020 the event started on the Downhill turf course.[4]

gollark: Oh², you mean you just need that much information before each file, right.
gollark: Oh, you mean just store it as a directory tree?
gollark: What am I *meant* to do, design my own binary format or something?
gollark: Hmm, dictionaries are quite a good idea.
gollark: https://lib.rs/crates/rustc-hashI love how rustc does bizarre microoptimizations like using somewhat faster hash functions for its hashtables but still manages to take ages to compile anything.
