Arthur Wilkinson (footballer)

Arthur Wilkinson was an English footballer who played in The Football League for Accrington.[1] Arthur Wilkinson made his League debut on 01-Dec-1888 at his home ground of Thorneyholme Road, Accrington. Arthur Wilkinson played on the right wing and Accrington won 5–1. After that triumph he was left out, or injured, but returned to the team to play in the return match against Burnley at Turf Moor, Burnley on 12-Jan-1889. Arthur Wilkinson played centre-forward and scored his debut goal. Returning to his more customary right-wing position Arthur Wilkinson played in both FA Cup ties against Blackburn Rovers. The 1st tie, on 02-Feb-1889, was at Thorneyholme Road and Wilkinson scored Accrington's only FA Cup goal of 1888–1889. Accrington held Blackburn Rover's 1-1 but lost the replay the following week 0–5. Accrington finished the season in 7th place, 2 places above Burnley who had to seek re-election to the 1889-1890 Football League.[2]
