Argentina Fans Kaattoorkadavu[1] is a 2019 Indian Malayalam-language film directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas,[2] starring Kalidas Jayaram and Aishwarya Lekshmi in leading roles.[3][4][5] The film is written by Ashokan Cheruvil, John Manthrickal and Midhun Manuel Thomas. The film's musical score was composed by Gopi Sunder.[6] It was released on 22 March 2019. This movie was a box-office disaster.[7]

Synopsis

As the title says, the story revolves around Argentina fans in Kaattoorkadavu, a village near Thrissur. The protagonist Vipinan (Kalidas Jayaram) is a diehard fan like his friend Suni (Aneesh Gopal) while their childhood friend Mehrunisa (Aishwarya Lekshmi), whom Vipinan deeply loves, is a Brazil fan. The story moves through various World Cups as well as stages of Vipinan's life. He manages to confess his love to Mehru multiple times but she turns him down. Along with their friendship, they also have a huge rivalry being Argentina and Brazil fans respectively. Then there are supporters of Portugal and Germany, and the many sweet revenge stories and betrayals form the rest of the story. The most fascinating part of the story is deep percolation of Communist ideology, hatred for Bourgeois, the Nazis in the mindset of people in Kerala. The marriage of the Muslim girl Mehru with the boy from Warrier family, the temple people is easily accepted when requested by the boy's widow mother to Mehru's parents. No fuss at all. Only problem is to change the menu the next day, to add vegetarian food. Nowhere in India can this happen. When the whole country is seething with hatred between communities this movie takes extremely progressive stand. The late Colombian soccer player Andres Ecobar speaking to Vipinan in his fantasy is the most fantastic part of the movie. When the player asks how Vinian will name his children he says if a girl Mehru will name, if a boy he will name him after Argentinian player. Marvellous progressive attitude.[8][9][10]
