The following subspecies are recognised:

  • Archaeoprepona chromus chromus (Guérin-Ménéville, 1844) (Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru, Argentina)
  • Archaeoprepona chromus priene (Hewitson, 1869) (Colombia)

Description

The wingspan is about 85 mm.[1] Adults have an iridescent-blue patch, which is confined to the discal area of the hindwing. There is also a series of submarginal eyespots.[2]

Montane forest at 1500 to 2000 metres in a Neotropic ecozone

Sangay National Park, Ecuador
