Appian sells a Platform as a Service for building enterprise software applications. It is a leader in the Low-Code Development,[3] Business process management,[4] and Case Management[5] markets. Its Low-Code Automation Platform enables businesses to create apps using little or no code.[6][7]

Appian was named the 2018 Washington D.C. area "Top Workplace" by The Washington Post.[8]

History

Appian was founded in 1999 by Matthew Calkins with co-founders Michael Beckley, Marc Wilson, and Robert Kramer. Matt Calkins is the current CEO.[1]Calkins graduated from Dartmouth in 1994 with a degree in economics and then joined MicroStrategy, a business software vendor.[9] He became the company’s youngest director when he was named the director of the Enterprise Product Group.[10][11] When he was 26, he left MicroStrategy and co-founded Appian.[10]

In 2001, Appian developed Army Knowledge Online.[12] At the time, it was regarded as “the world's largest intranet".[13]

In 2004, Appian released Appian Enterprise, its first Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) software platform.[14]

In 2010, Appian Cloud was accredited with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) low-level security by the U.S. Education Department. In 2013, it received FISMA Moderate Authorization and Accreditation from the General Services Administration (GSA). GSA procurement offices used Appian Cloud for acquisition planning.[15]

In 2014, Appian received $37.5 million in secondary investments from New Enterprise Associates, which was paid out to shareholders.[16][17] In 2015, Ryder began using apps built by Appian to switch to paperless processing. The apps are used by customers during the checkout process and internally for truck maintenance records.[18][19]

By 2016, Appian's software platform had evolved to include broader aspects of application development with a focus on low-code development.[20]

On May 25, 2017, Appian became a publicly-traded company, trading under the symbol APPN on the NASDAQ Global Exchange[21][22]

In 2018, In 2018, Appian moved its headquarters to Tysons, Virginia[23][2]

In May 2019, Appian released Appian AI enabling artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in applications built on Appian's platform.[24]

On January 7, 2020, Appian announced that it acquired Novayre Solutions SL, developer of the Jidoka RPA platform.[25] In March, the company launched a health management app to help other businesses track workforce health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, by collecting information from employees and storing it in a HIPAA-compliant cloud.[26]hat app is called COVID-19 Response Management.[27][28] A second app, Workforce Safety, was designed to help organizations reopen their offices.[27] The third helps banks accept and manage Paycheck Protection Program loan applications.[6] That app includes AI-powered intelligent document processing.[6] The fourth app, CampusPass, helps educational campuses collect COVID-19 related data about individuals and coordinate health and safety guidelines across academic communities.[29][30] The app was created in partnership with the University of South Florida to help plan for students returning to campus during the 2020 pandemic.[31]
