Ankole (cattle)
The Ankole is a breed of African cattle, belonging to the broad Sanga cattle group of African breeds.[1]:604 It was probably introduced to Uganda between five and seven hundred years ago by nomadic pastoralists from more northerly parts of the continent. It is distributed in much of eastern and central Africa, particularly in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and parts of Tanzania.
Strains
There are at least five distinct regional strains, some of which may be reported as breeds in their own right.[2][3]:109[4]
- Kigezi from the south west of Uganda, appear to have resulted from interbreeding of local Ankole cattle with Small humpless Shorthorned cattle [5]
- Watusi from Burundi and Rwanda and in Kivu area of the adjoining Kivu area of eastern DR Congo, with massive horns (the longest Ankole horns)[6] Not to be confused with the American breed Ankole-Watusi
- Ruzizi from the Ruzizi valley, to the west of the Ruzizi river between Lake Kivu and Lake Tanganika, near the border of the DR Congo with Rwanda and Burundi. With Long sickle shaped horns, coat colour is usually brown but red, red-and-white and black-and-white are also common.[7]
- Bahima from north-eastern DRC and across the border in north-western Uganda. Which are the tallest Ankole.[8]
- Bashi from south west of Lake Kivu in eastern DR Congo.[9]
and often included as well;
- Anuak from the Ethiopia-Sudan border area. [10]
- Aliab Dinka from the south east of South Sudan, generally white, grey or light fawn coat colour.[11]
- Nuer from south sudan. but with smaller horns than the Aliab Dinka.[12]
gollark: That would literally not work at all for this.

gollark: Look, if I rewrite it in Rust people will (rightly!) complain that I'm downloading a 1MB WASM blob for tiny features.
gollark: I feel like if Discord's team programmed the frontend in C they would manage to introduce a million memory leaks and security issues.
gollark: This seems like FRP or something, which could be neat but how does this even work.
