Andy Lewis (triathlete)

Andrew "Andy" Lewis MBE (born 24 January 1983)[1] is a British paratriathlete. Lewis won gold in the men's PT2 paratriathlon at the 2016 Paralympics.[2] He also won Gold in the Paratriathlon World Championships in Rotterdam in 2016 & European Championships.

Background

Lewis joined the army in 1999, training with the Parachute Regiment. He also competed locally as a cross-country runner.[3] At the age of 16 he was involved in a motorcycle accident, which eventually resulted in a through the knee amputation in his right leg when he was 22.[1]

Career

Lewis took up paratriathlon in 2013 and began competing in 2014. In 2016 he won gold at the European Championships and the ITU Para-Triathlon World Championships.[1]

Lewis won gold in the PT2 category at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, the first Paralympics to include triathlon events.[2] Lewis won in 1 hour 11 minutes and 49 seconds, with a 41-second winning margin.[4]

Personal life

Lewis lives in Whitecroft Lydney, Gloucestershire[5] with his wife and two children.[6]
