Career

Andrzej Kossakowski was born on 20 February 1938 in Lviv, Poland[1]. He attended a primary and secondary school in Sopot, Poland [1][2]. In the years 1955-1960, he studied physics at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Right after graduation, he got a job at the same university, first as an assistant, then as an older assistant in 1962[2]. In 1966, he defended his PhD thesis titled On the entropy increase law in informational thermodynamics of density operators, which was written under the supervision of Roman Stanisław Ingarden during the scientific internship in the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Wrocław in the academic year 1964/1965[1][2]. In 1967, he was employed at the Nicolaus Copernicus University as an Assistant professor[2]. In 1971, he habilitated, and his habilitation work is titled Informational decision scheme in statistical quantum mechanics.[1][2] He got promoted to docent in 1972,[1][2] and after three years he became an associate director of the Institute of Physics in didactics.[3]. In 1992, he became a professor.[2] Andrzej Kossakowski taught at the universities in Stuttgart (1973) Austin (1974), Milan (1975), Essen (1989), Leuven (1991),[2] Naples, Santiago de Chile, and Tokio[4].

In 2019, Andrzej Kossakowski received the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science in the field of mathematics, physics, and engineering for his works on the theory of open quantum systems.[4]

gollark: I have some JS which *almost* works, except it's *somehow* off by a few percent and it cuts off the bottom of the text.
gollark: Why is it that CSS makes it really easy to do complex layouts and such but there is literally no simple, working, consistent way - even with JS involved - to make a text area automatically fit its contents?!
gollark: Villains should really read the evil overlord list: http://eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html
gollark: Most villains in, well, media seem pretty stupid. They're just "ah yes I will be evil for no reason", do stupid things, and get surprised when they fail.
gollark: What is or isn't a bottleneck is obviously heavily dependent on what you actually do with your computer/what games you play/etc, and you can't get some convenient exact value, let alone one to ~~one decimal place~~ 3 significant figures.
