History

ASA was established in the year 1966 as the Institute of Temporary Services. Its members provide temporary and contract staffing, recruiting and permanent placement, outplacement and outsourcing, training, and human resource consulting. ASA and its state affiliates promote the interests of the industry through legal and legislative advocacy, research, public relations, education, and the establishment of high standards of ethical conduct.

In 1970, it got a new name - National Association of Temporary Services and by 1994 its again changed its name to the National Association of Temporary and Staffing Services. Finally, in 1999, it finally became the American Staffing Association.[2]

The association's board of directors includes representatives from 12 independent staffing firms and 12 national staffing companies.

ASA Staffing Index

The ASA Staffing Index tracks weekly changes in temporary employment and contract employment. The results obtained from the survey are typically posted nine days after the close of a given workweek, providing a near real-time gauge of staffing industry employment and overall economic activity. It is one of the ten important weekly economic indicators to gauge Weekly Economic Index (US).[3]

Training Programs

From time to time, ASA conducts industry specific training programs on anti-harassment[4], occupational safety and health[5], workforce management, etc.

Certifications

ASA offers training programs leading to certifications in 4 major areas
