Alex the Astronaut

Alexandra Lynn (born 1995), who performs as Alex the Astronaut, is an Australian singer-songwriter. She has been described as one of "Australia's most powerful and important songwriters".[1] Her music has been described as folk pop and folktronica, often drawing comparisons to Paul Kelly.[2][3] Lynn graduated from Pymble Ladies' College in Sydney before studying maths and physics at Long Island University, New York,[4] including a thesis on sonoluminescence,[5] where she played soccer for the LIU Post Pioneers.[6] Her record label, Minkowski Records, was named after the Minkowski diagram.[7]

Career

2017

She released her debut EP: To Whom It May Concern which features the single Already Home and was described by Huffington post as "a melancholy number about a bus ride and ruminations on the mundanities of life"[8] and includes the line "there's billionaires for president, and parking fines at hospitals". The second EP - See You Soon featured the single Not Worth Hiding [9] She performed this for Like a Version,[10] and was nominated for a J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year in 2017.[11] The song reached No. 23 on Triple J Hottest 100 and she played this at Triple J's One Night Stand.[12][13] It was described as an unofficial anthem for the "Yes" campaign in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey[14]

2018

Alex did a headline tour with Stella Donnelly, both artists were cited as "Two of the most important voices in Music".[15] Alex performed at The Great Escape Festival[16] in Brighton, UK and at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona.[17] She did her first national Australian headline 'Space Tour' in November.[18] Alex the Astronaut released standalone singles, Waste Of Time,[19] and Happy Song, both of which have been played on high rotation at Triple J.[20] She previewed both songs live with a full band performance at Splendour In The Grass in 2018.[21]  

2019

Alex performed at Laneway festival,[22] Party In The Paddock,[23] Beer & Cider Festival[24] and The Drop Festival.[25] Alex toured the UK and Europe including a solo gig at Camden Assembly.[26] The next single I Like To Dance was released early August 2019 which Brooklyn Vegan described as tuneful folk-pop to tell a haunting story.[27]

2020

The new single "I Think You're Great" was released in January and is already Top 200 on Shazam.[28]

Alex released her follow up single "Split The Sky" in April.[29] The track references the film franchise, Harry Potter, in the opening line where Lynn sings "I’ve been colder, watching Harry Potter looking older.". Alex The Astronaut tweeted the inspiration upon release, and James Phelps + Oliver Phelps who played the Weasley twins both retweeted the post.[30]

In May 2020, Alex The Astronaut announced her album The Theory of Absolutely Nothing and released a subsequent single titled 'Lost'.[31] Alex then released a music video for the track filmed in isolation that utilised a green screen to "travel through the galaxy and tropical locations with a newly-shaved head"[32]
