Alastair Brindle

Alastair Brindle (26 April 1939), was an English Professional Rugby League player who played in the 1950s and 1960s for his hometown team for Warrington[1] (Heritage No. 586).

Background

Alastair was born in Warrington, Cheshire in 1939 and currently resides in the local village of Burtonwood. Alastair grew up in Wellfield Street with his Parents and Brother's, Keith and Ian. Alastair moved from Wellfield Street to Fearnhead when he married Jeanette. After having their first child, they moved to Burtonwood where Alastair still lives today. Alastair is married, has three children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Playing career

Warrington-born Alastair Brindle signed for Warrington after appearing in the Second Row for the 1954 Lancashire Schoolboys team that had a half-back pairing of Jackie Edwards and Alex Murphy.

Alastair made his debut for Warrington as an 18-year-old Prop-Forward vs St Helens at Knowsley Road in September 1957. Alastair established himself in the team in the 1958/59 season and remained a regular for the next 12 seasons playing alongside club legend Brian Bevan.

Brindle played as a Prop-Forward for 12 seasons and played in the 1959 Warrington side that defeated St Helens 5-4 in the Lancashire Cup Final at Wigan, which was in front of 40,000 fans. The following season, Alastair was in the side that finished second in the league and reached the 1961 Championship Final at Odsal, only to lose out to Leeds.

In 1962/3 he played in the Warrington side that just missed out on reaching Wembley, losing to Wakefield in the semi-final. Brindle was part of the Warrington side that beat Rochdale to win the Lancashire Cup in 1965 which would be Alastair's second and final trophy with Warrington.

In 1965, Alastair played against the touring New Zealand side at Wilderspool which Warrington lost 7-14.

Alastair's Testimonal game was played in 1968 at Wilderspool, which was an All Star Soccer game between Warrington and an All Star XI which consisted of Brian Bevan, Brian Glover, Jackie Edwards, Laurie Gilfedder and Alex Murphy.

Brindle played his very last game for Warrington on 12 April 1969 against Wigan at Wilderspool.

Alastair was inducted into the Warrington Hall of Fame in 2015.
