Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh

Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh is a prominent Islamic religious figure in Bangladesh. He is also known as the Pir of Charchhina/Sarsina.[1]

He is also accused of collaborating with the Pakistan Army and committing war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation war.[2] He is a recipient of Independence Day Award.[3]

Career

Saleh was known as the Peer of Sharshina where he operated a Madrassah. During the Bangladesh Liberation war, he enjoyed friendly relations with the Pakistan Army.[4]

Saleh was awarded the Independence Day Award, the highest civilian honour, for his contribution to the education sector of Bangladesh in 1980.[2][5]

Saleh supported Abdus Sattar, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate for presidency in 1988.[6] He headed the Bangladesh Jamate Hizbullah Hazrat and Bangladesh Jamate Ulema.[7]

Controversy

During Bangladesh Liberation war, it is recorded in various government documents that Saleh was involved in crimes against humanity; The book "War of Independence of Bangladesh: Documents" (Vol. 7) and "Where are the killers and brokers of 1971" give direct account of his crimes. The Government of Bangladesh has thought of revoking the Independence Day Award.[2]
