Consortium
École Saint Joseph is part of the Saint-Pierre consortium comprising four other schools: Institution Saint-Michel in Solesmes; Saint-Joseph in Le Cateau; Sainte-Maxellende in Caudry and Saint-Thérèse in Le Quesnoy.
History
Prior to 1900, École Saint-Joseph was a girls' school located in a building on the Rue du Pontceau, with classes taught by nuns.[1] The school became a co-educational institution in 1999 by incorporating the Saint-Mary School for Boys, which was founded in 1892.[2] Since then, it has been located at 9 rue Jean Jaurès, and serves Solesmes and the surrounding area.[3]
Arts and culture
- On Monday 29 February 2016, Saint Joseph School parents, teachers, and pupils held a picnic and participated in several craft and sports activities in order to support peace.[4]
- Every year on the eve of the Christmas holidays, a Christmas market is installed in the refectory, selling floral compositions, pastries and other hand-made objects.[5]
- At the end of the 2014-2015 academic year, Saint-Joseph students won the 3rd national prize in the "Dog, Cat and me" contest organized by Purina. The €600 cash prize was partly donated toward the acquisition of a guide dog for a visually-impaired man.[6]
- Every year since 2009, a representative from a children's charity in Cotonou, Republic of Benin visits the school, and pupils donate the proceeds of their Lent charity activities.[7]
Sports
The school holds sports classes at the nearby municipal swimming pools, the Marie Amélie Le Fur Sports Hall, and the Édouard Delberghe building's indoor courts and martial arts room, where they practice circus disciplines.[8]
