Hat-Tippers

Hat-tippers were individuals who walked behind high-hat leaguesmasters and kept their hats steady. The higher the hat, the more important the leaguesmaster, and the more important it was not to let the hat fall down. Hat-tipping was not easy and keeping the hat still under doorways, arches and bridges, on windy days or when the leaguemaster himself moved was often difficult. Hat-tippers who let their master's head fall in the mud, like Sluggin did, had to pay with their life.
