How to install Windows 10

I tried installing Windows 10 from an .exe file but it deleted all of the files in the folder. Now there is only source folder left. I am trying to download it all again. Can somebody tell how to install it? I am currently running Windows 8.1.

What executable are you downloading exactly and why are you not doing it through Windows Update? You shouldn't have to run anything, it should just download the data in the background, then present the offer to perform the upgrade automatically. – Ramhound – 2015-07-29T17:02:07.293

... and don't expect everyone to be updated on the first day of release! – AFH – 2015-07-29T17:12:15.747

If you have a genuine (activated) version of Windows 8.1, have automatic updates on, and have reserved your copy of Windows 10 (via the tool that should have automatically appeared on your version of Windows recently) then Windows 10 will automatically download, it will also be installed through Windows Update (I don't think this happens till you request it to do so, but could be wrong).

You can check Windows Update or the Get Windows 10 tool that should be in your system tray (a white Windows logo in the taskbar, near where the clock normally is - usually the bottom right hand corner of the screen) to see if it is downloading yet or not. If not then it is likely that the update is not yet available in your region yet.

You can read more here

In this case there are no files you need to run - no ".exe" to click on.

Although the above method is the easier and preferred way for getting Windows 10, you can download Windows 10 without Windows Update. You can find out more information about that here. Note that, as the page explains, you need to put the files on a DVD or USB flash drive - it wont work if you try and run them from your hard drive.

As far as I am aware those are the only ways to get Windows 10 safely. Downloading from some other (non-Microsoft) source or installing via some other method is not supported and could lead to many problems.

I got the copy as indicated on windows website as a hidden folder of approx 6 gb size, but when i click on .exe file in it, it deleted all files. when I read around blogs and find out how to download again and now I am here to how to install it. dont know when updater will install it. – DeshDeep Singh – 2015-07-30T10:02:23.183

You shouldn't be running an .exe file in a hidden folder! Either you should be using Windows Update (which would mean no clicking on any files) or you should be downloading the files to a flash drive or iso file (which you then burn onto a DVD)! Hidden folders are hidden because they are not supposed to be used by users - which indicates that you are not doing things the way they are meant to be done. If you can't wait for Windows Update to do it's job then you need to use a flash drive or DVD, even for an upgrade. – Meeeeeesta D – 2015-07-30T10:37:31.107
