Forcing higher refresh rate on HDMI - bad for the system?

0

I have a laptop with Optimus technology: Intel HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M. I'm able to add custom resolutions with the Intel GPU control panel. I know that HDMI 1.4a officially only supports 60 Hz @ 1920x1080, but I'm able to add custom resolutions with higher Hz. Would I damage any hardware if I set the refresh rate to e.g. 75 Hz? There's a warning saying something about damage before you can add custom resolutions in the Intel control panel.

I have a 144 Hz monitor, but my laptop only has a HDMI port. I'm also using that monitor with a desktop PC @ 144 Hz with DVI-D.

The reason why I'm asking is that currently possible refresh rates for 1920x180 are 50i, 50p, 59i, 59p, 60i and 60p. And I'm playing a game which allows me to choose between 50 Hz and 59 Hz, but it always uses the interlaced resolutions, so it looks really bad. By adding 75p without adding 75i I can make sure, that the game doesn't use an interlaced resolution again.

What game? Might help you solve.the problem. – Ramhound – 2015-03-20T01:36:08.277

It's Project CARS. I can choose between "1920x1080, 50 Hz" and "1920x1080, 59 Hz" in the game, but those are both the interlaced versions. I don't know why... but they are... Adding 75p helped, because I can select it ingame and it can't "accidentally" use 75i. But I deleted the custom resolution again, because I don't want to risk the health of my laptop. Playing in windowed mode also helps. – John D. – 2015-03-20T12:31:02.747

You want to stay within the support frequencies of your hardware. Determine what frequencies both displays support then base your decision on that. – Ramhound – 2015-03-20T12:57:20.350
