Slow SSD to SSD Transfer Speed

0

My laptop uses a Samsung SSD. A few weeks ago I wanted to transfer a 6.22 GB folder from my internal SSD to an external SSD I own, also from Samsung. I keep the external SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure, and connected it to the laptop through the USB 3.0 port. The transfer was really fast. Today I wanted to transfer an 8.06 GB folder, but I am getting very slow speeds, about 30MB/s. I can't remember exactly what the high transfer speed was, but it was definitely way over 100MB/s. Is there a particular reason the transfer speed is so slow all of a sudden? I tried rebooting my computer, disconnecting and reconnecting the drive, but that didn't solve it. Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

are you sure your laptop has USB 3.0 slots, they are usually blue – Sickest – 2015-01-22T22:12:40.190

Yep, both the cable from the enclosure and the port in my laptop is blue. – Christian – 2015-01-22T22:13:48.133

have you tested that external on other computers to isolate the issue? – Sickest – 2015-01-22T22:15:14.533

How much free space does your SSD has? If less than 25% of free space, your SSD may be fragmented and cause the slowdowns. An SSD should never have less than 25% of free disk space if you want to keep optimal performance. – LPChip – 2015-01-22T22:20:43.680

The laundry list of reasons an SSD might start acting slower than before is gigantic. – killermist – 2015-01-22T22:24:41.573

1Maybe the first folder had 10 files and the second one has 10 million files? – SadBunny – 2015-01-22T22:28:21.293

Agree with Sad, many small files can kill your transfer speed. Have you tried copying the first "baseline" folder again? – Spencer5051 – 2015-01-22T22:37:29.957
