Laptop not turning on

1

I have an Asus n56VB laptop that I just recently bought a few months ago. Occassionally I have noticed that the laptop wont turn on. Mostly after hibernating the laptop the night before. I have tried the trick to holding down the power button for 30 seconds (sometimes even a minute more) and it doesnt work. The last time this happened I left the laptop alone for a day with all the power source removed and it turned on. It isnt doing the same anymore. I suspect it is residual charge preventing it from starting the laptop. Is there another way I can drain out the residual charge or is there another cause to this problem?

The power light(bulb symbol) lights up and I can hear a small hum coming from the laptop when I press the power button with the battery or charger. Other than that, nothing happens even the screen is black. The laptop was fine yesterday.

Please help if you know anything about this. It is really starting to worry me.

You know, I thought about buying this laptop a couple of months ago from Amazon, the only thing that prevented me from buying it was the reviews that I've read claims about this problem, and If I were you, I'll contact Asus to sort things out with them since the laptop a few months old (still new). It's not fair to have problems with a few months of use. – iSR5 – 2014-10-10T10:56:03.453

I am keeping that as my last resort because usually Asus services takes very long even if the problem is simple. I was wondering if I could fix the problem by my own before I have to give it to them. I am a student who is doing FYP this year and it is going to be problematic for me if I dont have my laptop during this time. Thanks though :-) – Rowx – 2014-10-10T11:10:52.220

Oh, that's a really bad timing then :(, If you did try to drain the residual charge and didn't work, then try to use another AC charger, and do the same method, just make sure there's nothing connected while doing the drain method. – iSR5 – 2014-10-10T11:22:46.383

What research have you done? Are the BIOS up to date? If this is under warranty, contacting the manufacturer should be the first thing you do. Messing with things on your own, or by suggestion of others, could possibly void your warranty in some cases. – CharlieRB – 2014-10-10T11:31:26.553

Still not working. Tried a few times. No battery or ac plugged in while draining :( – Rowx – 2014-10-10T11:32:20.693

1The BIOS is up to date as far as I remember. It is still under warranty. Just hoping I could try on my own if it is a simple problem. – Rowx – 2014-10-10T11:34:01.870

Experience, at least with Win 7, is that hibernation can be a problem and is not always well behaved. If you are having problems with it, disable hibernation. – fixer1234 – 2014-10-10T18:26:32.390

@fixer1234 I am thinking the same as well. But to disable it, I need to be able to turn on my laptop first. Could it be that the laptop is stuck in hibernation mode or something of the sort? Is there a way to reset if it is? – Rowx – 2014-10-11T13:59:06.027

Try removing the battery. – fixer1234 – 2014-10-11T14:29:39.223

@fixer1234 I have removed the battery and tried powering it up with the charger alone. It still doesn't turn on but the power light is on though. – Rowx – 2014-10-11T20:05:01.737

When it hibernates, it stores everything and is configured to reverse the process when it starts up. However, that process doesn't start from a cold boot. Pulling the battery let it power up again, but the hibernation configuration may be confusing things (it was set up to resume everything that was open before but you aren't starting from the right condition). You need to get input from someone with knowledge about how to fix that. Try editing the question to update the information and that will freshen it in the active questions list. – fixer1234 – 2014-10-11T20:42:35.260

When this happens, can you boot Linux form a USB stick or DVD? – Mawg says reinstate Monica – 2019-11-11T08:33:28.120
