Table Symbol in Word for Mac manuscript file

1

When I create a table in Word, there is a symbol of reverse arrows with a double line in between that shows up when I put the cursor over a gridline. This indicates that I can drag the line to adjust my column or row width or height. I get that. But I have a manuscript file with no tables in it, and the same symbol shows up when my cursor is right at the document's margins. It's like there is a hidden table or something. It's very strange and doesn't happen in any other of my Word docs. Does anyone know why?

The other thing about this document is it is 1.7 MB but there are no photos or images imbedded. It's all type. It seems like it should be about half a megabyte at best.
