Computer wouldn't wake up, reinstalled Vista home premium, now PC won't boot

I hope someone can help me find an answer to this. Our vista 64 bit PC was acting up- it wouldn't wake from sleep requiring holding down the power button to shut down the computer after which I could restart it and it would function normally. I did the whole deactivating USB devices to wake it but was still having a problem waking it. It's a 5 year old HP.

Ultimately, I decided to try reinstalling vista to see if that would correct the issue. Inserted the install disc, reinstalled vista but at restart, it wouldn't restart- it acts like its powering down, screen goes blank, the power button stays lighted, and that's it- no restart. Hard shutdown and power back on nets the same result. No beep code- The psu powers on, the hard disk powers up, the CPU fan powers up, the gpu fan does not.

Thought somehow the bios may have had a problem, removed the CMOS, disconnected power, and on power up got the POST single beep but that was it. Was able to reinsert the vista install disk, monitor working for the first time in a while, reinstalled vista and am back to square one- no post, no beep, no screen.

After reading a ton of forums, I'm stumped. I'm thinking a component problem but which one? I'd think gpu if it didn't work that second time. Any help would be appreciated. Hate to spend a lot of money on a 5 year old PC.

Are you sure you didn't run into a problem while installing? You should redo it just in case before you continue anything else. – Phoenix Logan – 2014-04-05T21:06:25.650

Reinstalled twice... Same result. No errors or otherwise during install. Think the absence of a boot beep has to be a clue to what's up after the install. Need to disconnect power and remove CMOS/ reinsert CMOS and restart to get a beep. Thinking either m board or psu. – user313238 – 2014-04-06T05:16:03.003

Alright... That stinks though and I wish I knew what else to try... :( – Phoenix Logan – 2014-04-06T12:15:34.563
