Very strange Windows 2000 server rebooting issue

0

I have a Windows 2000 server used for voicemail on our phone system. A couple of days ago the server just started rebooting itself about every 15 minutes - no blue screen, but not exactly the same amount of time each time.

There were a few events errors that I corrected but still no luck. Now when the server reboots no events at all except information that services have started. Then I noticed something. I use licensed Teamviewer 7 to remote into the server. I noticed while I'm using Teamviewer the server does not reboot. I left Teamviewer open for the whole day and the server stayed running. Closed Teamviewer (not the service, just the console) the server rebooted within 1/2 hours.

My guess is there is some rouge registry entry telling the machine to reboot, but does not get read while Teamviewer is running. I've had Teamviewer on the machine for a long period of time with no problems before this started happening. Any idea on how to troubleshoot this?

a registry entry wouldn't cause windows server to restart. if it was a regitry entry then it also wouldn't be a new problem – Ramhound – 2014-03-07T14:31:12.550

1Did you check to see if a screensaver or standby is activated? This would explain why it didn't happen when you were using teamviewer. – xxl3ww – 2014-03-07T15:09:18.603

Also check the CPU temp levels. It could be that the screensaver kicks in and the CPU load is enough to overheat it and cause reboot. – DrNoone – 2014-03-07T15:12:53.113

You should specify the errors you got in the system event log, and what did you do to fix them. – and31415 – 2014-03-07T16:51:09.150

At first I was getting Symantec Antivirus information and Source: 'SENS' no event ID. I uninstalled Symantec and both of those items went away. In System events I was getting "Automatic Update service hung on starting" so I disabled the service. Have a feeling that (WUS) is the problem but logically makes no sense to me - why would teamviewer prevent a shutdown? – ken – 2014-03-07T18:16:20.310
