Why does Remote Desktop Connection for mac work on ethernet, but not wifi?

I am trying to access my work PC from my home iMac (on wifi) using Network Connect and Remote Desktop Connection. NC seems to work fine in establishing the connection. But when I attempt to use RDC, I get that generic error message:

The Mac cannot connect to the Windows-based computer. This problem can occur if: • The Windows-based computer is not set up to accept remote connections. • The Windows-based computer is not turned on. • The Mac, or the Windows-based computer is experiencing network problems.

Try connecting to the Windows-based computer again, or contact your administrator.

I know the target pc is fully enabled to receive RDC because I can VPN perfectly using my home pc to the work pc. Also via wifi.

However, if I plug the iMac into the ethernet instead of using wifi - it works! What would cause this situation?

As an FYI - I'm the company's accidental techie. I have a MCSA/MCSE who supports me. He's not able to understand the issue either.

1You might be connecting to a different network. Are you able to ping the target when on wireless? What is the IP address and subnet mask of each connection? – arco444 – 2014-02-17T17:50:19.063

The Mac's IP address of the wired connection differs from the IP address of the wifi connection (per Network Connect). But the PC on the wifi has the same Mac wifi IP address... and the PC connects to RDC just fine. – George B – 2014-02-17T17:53:25.870

RDC is not limited to one trusted address either. – George B – 2014-02-17T17:55:30.567

where exactly is the target pc when you connect via ethernet and where are you via wifi. is this all on the same network or are you at home trying to access your work computer? – Sickest – 2014-02-17T19:03:22.797

I know it's not an answer to your question, but I seem to remember I had issues with RDC on my Macbook > Windows PC and my solution ended up being a program named CORD
