Possibly a hardware issue: I've tried it with Windows 7, Windows 8 and all kinds of drivers.
The speaker volume is nice and loud and plays no problem. However when I plug in my headphones, the sound is VERY faint. There is no indication by the OS that I've plugged in a headphone and shows I am still playing out of my speaker in the settings.
I suppose the reason why the volume is so faint in the headphones is that the signal isn't being actively amplified whereas the speakers are probably receiving power. So in other words, the OS isn't detecting a headphone so doesn't route power to amplify it. However since I did plug it in, the system routes the audio signal which makes my headphones play it in a very faint volume.
Any ideas or tips? I don't want to open my laptop.

Have you made sure your headphones don't have a volume setting on them? Have you made sure when your laptop changes audio from the main speakers to your headphones the audio is highered, because Audio from your speakers and headphones could be 2 different categories Source so make sure the volume is raised on both.
