Is there any special characters involved? I want to be able to open a console connection in my application and exit upon completion of a task

To get out from a "virsh console": With an english keyboard try:

 # Ctrl+]
 # Ctrl+5

All those special keys are a great problem when using another keyboards than UK. Please provide with more examples below for different languages and OS.

  • OSX Swedish map:
Ctrl+'å'

1The Danish keyboard sequence is the same as the Norwegian one: CTRL + "^¨~" button – Povl Falk-Jensen – 2015-04-23T12:16:35.023

Workaround for those who have problems finding the shortcut:

  1. Change your systems keyboard language to a U.S Keyboard language

  2. Look at an image of a US keyboard layout and ctrl+] the corresponding keys on your keyboard

With French keyboard, OS X: Ctrl+$.  (On the Apple wireless French keyboard, $, , and * are on a key to the left of the Enter key.)  See this picture:

Is that the same as (Ctrl)+(Shift)+(4)? – Scott – 2015-10-26T08:38:48.827

nope, on my keyboard (apple wireless french keyboard) it is on the left of the enter key. see this picture : http://ilovemymac.bachibouzouks.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/HT1171_01-wireless_keyboard-001-fr.png

The community wiki post suggests that it is actually ctrl + shift + 5. Have you got any documentation to back this up?

– Burgi – 2016-03-04T15:06:22.770

there is a difference between German PC keyboard layout and German Mac keyboard layout. The suggested one is for PC, not Mac. I back this up through daily practice. – Fadi Asbih – 2016-03-04T22:11:46.043

@Burgi community wiki answer just summed up other answers here, but IMVHO Fadi Asbih should just extend community wiki answer... – g2mk – 2018-02-09T08:36:43.033
