If nothing else helps 7+ Taskbar Tweaker will for sure:
You'll need to keep it running, but it's quite a light-weight app and a portable installation is possible.

Yes, I already mentioned that clearly. However I find it so useful that I don't really mind, and it's not too heavy. I love the latest feature that's been added to display seconds in the tray clock. You can see other ways to use it from my previous answers.

- Click on Start button and type GPEdit.msc in Instant Search text box, then hit Enter.
- Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar in left pane of Local Group Policy Editor.
- Locate and double click on Turn off taskbar thumbnails in right pane of Local Group Policy editor.
- Select Enabled radion button.
- Click OK to make the change effective.
- Logoff and logon again or restart computer if needed.

Edit: For Windows 7:
- Backup registry
- Win + R -> regedit
- Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband
- Right Click
Taskbandfolder -> New -> DWORD 32-bit value - Name the new DWORD
MaxThumbSizePx - Right click the new DWORD -> Modify -> enter "1"
- Reboot

The best solution I have found is to go into this registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Then create a new DWORD value called ExtendedUIHoverTime with a value of 20000. That's supposed to cause a 20 second delay before the preview pops up, but for me it stopped it from happening entirely.

@Alph.Dev: The exact value doesn't really matter (hex or not) - any sufficiently large value will delay the thumbnails long enough that they are no longer a problem. 20000 as a hex number is 131072 decimal so worst case you'll disable the thumbnails even more so :-) DWORD is always 32-bit in the registry, a 64-bit value is called a QWORD. – Malvineous – 2016-11-11T01:44:18.570

If you mean that you want to disable the Aero Peek feature (Where you see the preview of whatever the running task is when you hover your cursor over it), these are the best instructions I've found:

Strangely, unchecking only "Enable Aero Peek" and even logging off and logging back in or restarting did nothing for me on Win7, since the thumbnail previews still show up. – Karan – 2013-06-14T23:58:49.430
