Rename user folder in Windows 8

I just bought a PC with Windows 8 and am struggling to get to grips with it. When setting it up I entered the name Signon which was the wrong name. I then went into the users part of the Control Panel and changed the name to signon3admin which is what it should have been however now the user folder is still called Signon. I was worried that this could cause problems when going on the network as another computer on the network has the user name signon-pc.

I have tried changing the user folder name as suggested in this question, however I do not have the professional edition of Windows 8 so do not have the Local Users and Group Users listed in Computer Management. I tried using the command prompt but it didn't work. I went into the registry and changed the profile image path but then when I restarted it signed me into a temporary account so I went and changed it back again.

  • I realised that I'd missed the first instruction to create a local user account - can you explain why this is necessary and what happens to it after the file user name has been changed? Does it get deleted or should I use that account and delete the original wrongly named user account that was created when I first turned on the PC?
  • Does it matter if the user folder name doesn't match the user name? Should I not bother trying to change it?
  • Does it matter if I only have one administrator account and no other user accounts as it's only me using the computer?

(facepalm x 2) The question How to rename user folder in Windows 8? has 55 upvotes currently; that's not the question number. Also, you should link to whichever question you're referring to. We can't magically figure out what you're talking about (always).
